Digital Ad Submissions to BISM...

Summary

  • BISM requires PDF for digital advertisements. For more information please contact Robin Kramer, Technical Representative, Dartmouth Printing Co, ph. 603-643-2220 ext. 291, email: rkramer@dpc-nh.com
  • Supply a proof that represents the final digital file.
  • All color files must be in CMYK or spot color mode.
  • Use only Type 1 fonts. Always embed fonts or convert fonts to outlines.
  • Accepted media types include high-density floppy disks, Iomega Zip, Iomega Jaz, CD-R, and e-mail attachment or FTP by arrangement.

Basic Instructions

  1. A proof MUST accompany the advertisement digital file. This proof should be output at the same size as the electronic file and labeled with the same name as the file. Please see Special Notes: Color Proofs.
  2. BISM recommends press-optimized PDF for a digital ad exchange format. With special testing administered by BISM’s printer, BISM may agree to accept native QuarkXpress files, as well as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator files saved as EPS files. Please contact Robin Kramer, Technical Representative, Dartmouth Printing Co, ph. 603-643-2220 ext. 291, email: rkramer@dpc-nh.com for testing specifications.
  3. All supplied files should be carefully proofread prior to submission. The most current version of the ad, ready for output, should always be submitted.
  4. Be sure to submit your files on media supported by BISM’s printer. Accepted media types include high-density floppy disks, Iomega Zip, Iomega Jaz, and CD-R. Ads must be submitted on disk — emailed artwork or attachments will not be accepted.
  5. Always indicate what software you used to create your file, as well as any other information critical for final film output. A printed file directory should accompany all digital ad submissions. Do not send your only copy of the files. Always make a backup copy and save it in a safe place.
  6. Never send an ad that is embedded in a text file from a word processing program such as MS Word. Each file on the supplied media should be the final digital ad only in an accepted file type.
  7. Do not supply ads created in "office suite" applications such as Excel or PowerPoint. These applications typically produce files that are not suited for quality press reproduction.
  8. Accepted compression methods are WinZip on the PC and StuffIt on the Mac.

Instructions for Creating Ad in Software Application

FILE TYPES
BISM recommends press-optimized PDF for a digital ad exchange format. We will distribute Postscripting and Acrobat Distiller guidelines upon request. With special testing administered by BISM’s printer, we may agree to accept native QuarkXpress files, as well as Adobe PhotoShop or Adobe Illustrator files saved as EPS files. Please contact Robin Kramer, Technical Representative, Dartmouth Printing Co, ph. 603-643-2220 ext. 291, email: rkramer@dpc-nh.com for testing specifications.

FONTS
If Type 1 fonts are used in a PhotoShop of Illustrator file, be sure they are converted to paths or outlines, or embedded in the files. Select "include document fonts" or "convert to outlines" when saving your files. Type 1 fonts used in PDF must be fully embedded in the supplied file. If QuarkXpress format is used, please supply all Type 1 fonts necessary to output the ad. Do not use TrueType fonts in the creation of your files.

SUPPORTING GRAPHICS
If page layout application files are submitted, all necessary graphics must accompany the application files. If PDF is submitted, all high-resolution graphics must be embedded within the files.

4-COLOR FILES
If your digital ad will be reproduced in the 4-color (CMYK) process mode, make sure you select the CMYK color space when creating and saving your files. If you files will be reproduced using spot colors, select the appropriate color from the program’s color libraries. Do not use the RGB color space when creating files for CMYK process color output. Doing so can result in unexpected color shifts in the printed product.

Instructions for Scanned Artwork

LINE ART SCANS
Line art scans (without halftone dots) should be scanned at a minimum of 1200 dpi in bitmap mode and saved as TIFF or EPS files.

HALFTONE SCANS
Art to be reproduced as halftones should be scanned at 300 dpi in greyscale mode and saved as TIFF files.

COLOR SCANS
Color art to be reproduced as halftones should be scanned at 300 dpi in CMYK mode and saved as TIFF files. Always save your color scans into the CMYK color space. Never include RGB color scans in your digital files. When scans are converted from RGB into CMYK the color can change significantly and type can be lost.

Special Notes

COLOR PROOFS
BISM requires a color proof in order to print 4-color CMYK files. We deal mainly with two types of color proofs:

  1. The proof may be a high-resolution digital halftone proof that is SWOP certified. From a SWOP certified proof, we can guarantee a close color match at press.
  2. The proof may be a non-SWOP certified proof (such as those created from dye-sublimation or inkjet systems) which serves to confirm the content of the digital file, but may not match to ink colors on press.
  3. If color match is critical, we recommend a proof made to SWOP specifications.

FILE CORRECTIONS
BISM recommends that all digital ad submissions be complete and ready for imaging. BISM’s printer will process all digital ads through a series of preflight tests to be sure they conform to the parameters set forth in this guideline. If the digital ad cannot be used for imaging to film or plate, BISM will contact the advertising client and request a resubmission of the file, with corrections, within two working days.

File modifications by BISM’s printer may not be possible due to system differences or unsupported file types. It is the desire of BISM that the advertising client, not the printer, make any necessary corrections to a file. However, should BISM’s printer be required to make any late-stage corrections to a file in order to meet BISM’s printing deadline, the advertising client will be billed for the printer’s services.
